It was afternoon after a cool sunny morning. We were heading for the forests. Some informer had already informed our major that a group of drug dealers had hidden drug and money in the forests which were meant to be passed through the border. Drug dealing was a good business there and the army was dead against it. Usually at night these were kept hidden in the jungles and then some other party used to take it. There also used to be money exchanged. A Chinese guy by the name of Xiang used to live nearby. Once a week he used to come to our place to exchange money. When ever we needed to buy essentials, we needed Yuan (Chinese Currency) as most shops nearby demanded that. Also if we gave him Yuan he used to exchange it for Rupees at a nominal rate.During that mission, according to orders, we had seized about a 100 kg of heroin which was worth nearly 23 million rupees. I was happy that our mission would be accomplished. But what was more interesting was that we had found 7 million Yuan in cash. Also there was more that 10 million Rupees hidden in a bag. We were a group of 20 solders and decided not to report that almost instantaneously. We had thought of dividing the money equally after which we could have become millionaires. After struggling in the jungle for days when we will be finally send to the city then we could enjoy life.
Soon, Anil, a very calculative guy did the calculations that it would amount to nearly 2.8 million per soldier going according to the rates of Xiang who we had unanimously decided to use to exchange the money. After the money was divided, we slowly started exchanging the money with him. It took quite some time, and Xiang also had a bit good time. The seized drugs were taken to some other place in a helicopter but when we said we too wanted to go, the authorities refused.
A nearby post office was the only way to contact Vanessa because the mobile remained out of signal. Once a week I received a letter and also replied. Her condition did improve after my joining the army, but none of us were happy to live without each other. I dared and told her about my treasure hunt and that we would soon become millionaires. She was happy but wanted me to go back to her so that we could enjoy the money.
Each time we tried to contact our heads and generals to pull us out, they denied. Life was tough. Most did not even had a drop of water, all there bottles were stuffed with money. We were so rich yet we had to live in jungles. The most well known words of anyone were “Will I ever get to enjoy my money? Or will I die like this?” The 20 of us were lucky enough to hit the jack pot and land with millions of rupees, but we had no peace, we were not near our loved ones to enjoy the fortune.
