III

Then came the day when we finally got orders to be pulled out. We all were excited. But you can be lucky only once, not every time. The worst happened. The major said that he would like to detain the 20 of us for investigation because he had information that some money was also seized in the raid. The other battalions were sent home to enjoy. We had to find a way to hide our money as there were chances of sudden checking. The total money by then had been converted to Indian rupees and amounted to almost 57 million which was too much to hide. And no one could be trusted. There was only one night gap and we had to hide the money by any means possible.

When all of us sat to discuss about the place, the only place suitable enough was suggested by Anil. He suggested that we should hide it underground and cover it up. This burial place was supposed to be far away from where we were posted so that it wouldn’t be searched. Only two of us take all the money that night and hide it. Every one agreed.

I was then one of the most trustworthy guys in there. Anil and his brother had other plans in their mind. Being the trustworthy and a very supportive guy for Anil and his younger brother Sunil, also in the battalion, I was told of a new plan hatched by them. They said that Anil and I was supposed to go to hide the money. Anil said that we would go ordinarily but won’t hide the money. We were supposed to flee and later Sunil would join us. I knew greed was not a good thing, when I explained this to Anil, the rebuked me saying, “Don’t try to be the next Mahatma Gandhi here. You don’t want to go don’t. I would go and run then. I had decided to tell you these as you are a good guy at heart and I understood why you were working here despite hating this life.”

I thought twice and suggested that may be we will run with the money but not now. We will hide it in a place but tell others that we have hid it somewhere else. Then when will go to search for the money along with the rest but return disappointed. Later some day we three would come and take all the money. He agreed to my suggestions. We did as we had planned. Everything went off well enough. We would get about 19 million each instead of the 2.8 million. It would be great and we won’t require a job any more. It was all cash and you can do anything with that money.
